Their challenge: to make a short film in 48 hours in Sarcelles

Cameras, computers, poles… Here is the equipment that the 11 participating teams, i.e. 80 people, will need at the Project 48 H Festival in Sarcelles to carry out their filming. It is mainly young people who will compete, from this Friday, during the competition. But the director Amadou Mariko and director of the Project 214 association is keen to clarify, “the important thing is that young people help each other and discover each other”.

The objective of the festival, open to all, is to make a 7-minute short film on a given theme and genre drawn by lot. It can be a comedy, a drama, a thriller and even burlesque on the theme of love or betrayal for example. With an added condition: make a given character speak or include a specific object. Apart from these instructions, filming can take place anywhere, participants have free time. The competition is financed by the town hall of Sarcelles and the National Agency for Territorial Cohesion (ANCT) and the winners win the title of best film, best actor or even best screenplay.

Jean-Pascal Zadi, best male hope at the Césars, member of the jury

Budding filmmakers come mostly from Sarcelles, but from different neighborhoods. “What I want is to build a bridge between young people. Last year, two participants lived next door but didn’t even know each other, today they shoot films together,” says Amadou, himself from Sarcelles.

From the script, through editing, acting and directing, the young people will have to do everything themselves. For the youngest among them, technicians will accompany them during assembly. Among the members of the jury, there will be in particular Jean-Pascal Zadi, director and actor from Bondy (93), awarded at the Césars as “Best male hope”. “It’s a bit like a reality show they get together for 48 hours, live and create together, it’s an experience for each of them and they are watched by pros”, observes Amadou Mariko.

“Young people come in search of self-esteem”

The festival is an opportunity for budding filmmakers to develop their network in the field. “For me, it’s a real challenge to write a screenplay in two days, but it also exercises me for my future profession, I hope so and I can talk to people in the business and make acquaintances”, explains Sheraz. Bennouf, a 23-year-old woman, who signed up. If Sheraz wants to make cinema his future professional life, others are just looking to participate in a project that values them.

“They’re not all movie fans, they’re looking for self-esteem. When they discover their production, they say to themselves I did this on my own », Enthuses Amadou. This is the third time he has organized the festival, he says he is “happy” to see young people from different neighborhoods working together. Two years ago, the festival took place in Pantin. Amadou plans to invest Aubervilliers in a few months to do the same thing. “Afterwards, I would like to go somewhere other than Ile-de-France to see people create,” he concludes.
