NEW YORK – A mother was arrested for allegedly trying to kill her 10-month-old baby in the New York City of Watervliet, the New York City Police Department said. The boy was found with violent injuries inside a residence in deplorable conditions, according to authorities.
Watervliet Police Chief Joseph L. Centanni described the case as “disturbing” because the assaults allegedly carried out by the defendant, Samantha L. Valentine, 31, against her 10-month-old baby, were captured by a camera that was in the child’s room. “They took place over a period of four days and they were horrible,” added Centanni.
According to the police report, officers from the Watervliet Department responded to the home in 2402 7th Avenue after receiving reports of a 10-month-old baby not breathing. Upon arrival, they found him in his room without responding and tried to save his life while medical personnel arrived.
After an investigation, the authorities indicated that they found that the baby’s injuries occurred after violent attacks by the mother.
Samantha L. Valentine was arrested on October 26 and received three counts of attempted murder in the second degree, assault in the second degree and endangering the welfare of a minor.
Centanni also pointed out that the house where the boy was found was in “unsanitary and dirty” conditions. In addition, the woman had already been arrested in 2019 for selling sick cats that died shortly after giving birth.
“I understand that the abuse of children and animals is polarizing, but in my 26 years of doing this, it rarely happens in the same case,” said Centanni, who stated that these types of cases had never occurred in that community.
“The actions of this defendant are unequivocal proof that monsters walk among us. The brutal way this baby was assaulted defies all decency and compassion, ”Centanni said. “Parents are supposed to protect their children from danger. I kindly ask the community to pray for the full recovery of this precious child. Every member of the Watervliet Police Department will continue to work tirelessly to bring those responsible for these types of criminal acts to justice, ”he concluded.
The case remains under investigation. The baby’s condition was not disclosed after being transported to a hospital.
