Theft of Gold Mosque Dome Decorations Worth IDR 3 Billion Revealed in Kayeli Village, Maluku

KOMPAS.com – The case of theft of gold decorations on the dome of the Al Huda Mosque, Kayeli Village, Buru Regency, Maluku, was revealed.

The perpetrator is a fisherman from Kayeli Village with the initials AG.

Head of the Criminal Investigation Unit (Kasat Reskrim) of the Buru Resort Police (Polres) Iptu Aditya Bambang Sundawa said that the theft of gold decorations worth IDR 3 billion was carried out by the perpetrator on Monday (4/3/2024) at 02.00 WIT.

When stealing the 2.6 kilogram decoration, AG had to climb the mosque dome.

For this reason, AG prepared a number of equipment. He also wore a face covering while in action.

“The suspect used two wooden ladders. The first was a 5.18 meter ladder and the other was a 3 meter high ladder, as well as a 5 meter long nylon rope,” he said, Monday (11/3/2024).

When he was on the mosque dome, AG pulled the alif pillar decoration using wood that had iron attached to the end.

“It was pulled three times and the alif pole fell onto the roof of the mosque. Then the suspect opened the rope and threw it down with the ladder,” he said.

Due to the fall, the mosque’s dome decoration was broken. AG then broke it again into five parts.

Arriving home, AG walked towards the beach to bury some of the decorations on the mosque dome. Some parts were buried under new trees and under mat trees.

However, Aditya did not mention the reason why the perpetrator hid the stolen gold by burying it.

According to Aditya, AG took about three hours to act.

Mosque dome decoration thieves are in debt

What was AG’s motive for stealing the gold mosque dome decoration?

Aditya said that the theft was triggered by economic problems.

“This suspect was in a lot of debt, both in the village and in several other places, so the suspect was brave enough to take this action,” he said.

He added that when he stole the gold mosque dome decoration, AG acted alone.

“The person who stole the Alif pole was AG’s own brother, so so far the perpetrator is single and there is no involvement of other people,” he said.

Initially, AG admitted that he was assisted by four other people. The police asked for information from the four people on Sunday (10/3/2024).

During the investigation, the police concluded that the four people were not involved.

“After conducting an examination in a separate room, we did not find any involvement of the four witnesses with the suspect, and the statements of the four witnesses did not match the suspect’s statements,” he explained.

The police, said Aditya, had also staged a scene of theft with the suspect in Kayeli Village.

Based on the reconstruction, it was not found that other people were involved in the theft of the gold decoration on the mosque dome.

For your information, the loss of the mosque’s dome decoration shocked the residents of Kayeli Village.

Raja (Village Head) Kayeli Fandi Ashari Wael revealed that the alif pole had been installed since 2015.

The gold ornaments were donated by residents of Kayeli Village and also miners on Mount Botak.

After being lost, the mosque dome decoration was found buried in the forest of Kayeli Village on Saturday (9/3/2024).
