Theatrical works by eight producers stand out in the western “Open Curtain” contest

This year the Curtain Open theater contest was announced, organized by the Ministry of Culture and Sports (MCD), this August 2 the eight best participating theater groups and companies in the west of the country were awarded. According to the Vice Minister of Culture, Cristhian Calderón, Q200 thousand were destined for the contest.

The initiative, according to the MCD, was created to support the Guatemalan theater sector, since its activities were affected by the pandemic. Theatrical teams of six to twelve people with experience of at least three years participated in the Open Curtain contest; each presented an original work to a shortlist of experts in dramatic art.

The professional juries were:

– Luis Fernando Juárez, Technical Artistic Head II of the Modern and Folkloric Ballet;

– Gretchen Fabiola Barneond Martínez, Technical Director of the Artistic Training Directorate of the General Directorate of the Arts; Y

– María Mercedes Ofelia Arce Arrivillaga, Head of the Substantive II Department of the “Miguel Ángel Asturias” Cultural Center.



The General Directorate of the Arts announced the winners of the musical category of Curtain Open of the West:

– The producer Esteban López Ramírez, from Quiché, for the play “La Casa de Bernarda”;

– The producer Elmer Oswaldo Yaxón Bocel, from Sololá, for the play “Pido la Palabra”;

– The producer Nancy Ruiz Lee, from Quetzaltenango, for the play “The last days of Sin Ventura”;

– The producer Marta Guadalupe Tuyuc Us, from Totonicapán, for the work “Ewan Tzij (hidden word)”;

– The producer Madelyn Liseth González Domínguez, from Quetzaltenango, for the play “Nuestra Señora de Las Nubes”;

– The producer Jesús Encarnación Puac Cua, from Totonicapán, for the work “Nan Ixmukané”;

– The producer Daniel Fernando Guarcax González, from Sololá, for the work “K’Astajil”; Y

– Producer Guillermo Rafael Santillana Herrera, from Sololá, for the work “Ixkik and the Tree of Life”.

Each selected received a prize of Q25,000.00 with original works suitable for the public.

“In this way the Ministry of Culture and Sports develops and strengthens the performing arts and recognizes the artists of the theater scene in their role as creators, performers and filmmakers,” said the portfolio in its official statement. The schedule to see the performances on stage will be announced shortly.
