Theatrical series at Caras y Caretas 2037 | Program…

For that unexpected March of 2020, among so many doubts and uncertainties, many theater players had no choice but to reinvent themselves. And so it was that between streaming works, virtual rehearsals and video calls, they endured times of theatrical silence and despair. In the case of the equipment that produces the room Caras y Caretas (located in Sarmiento 2037) that time of immobility that they went through while science did its thing, allowed them to “rethink the importance of the theatrical ritual and the contact in situ with the public”. At least that’s how he describes it Marcelo Melingo, who leads the artistic direction and production of the space, together with Horacio David.

As a result of the work of many months, the Caras y Caretas team today presents the 2021 season, a new series of face-to-face theater that has already premiered, and now offers the possibility of returning to its room, with all the protocols and corresponding care. “We are very grateful to the entire artistic community that accompanies us and puts its shoulder to a theater that is neither independent nor commercial, but as we like to call it: a popular theater,” says Melingo. Participating in the cycle: Othelo. Termina mal, the version of Shakespeare’s classic, with translation, adaptation and direction by Gabriel Chamé; Power, written in 1983 by Eduardo Pavlovsky and now directed by Norman Briski and 200 strokes of Serrano ham, a biodrama by Gustavo Garzón and Marina Otero.

But to the proposals that were already on the billboard at the beginning of 2020, a novelty is added: Plague monologues, a series of ten short one-man sessions that emerged in times of pandemic and that are presented for the first time in person. It is a set of works brought together by a writing contest that the Caras y Caretas room organized at the beginning of the quarantine, and that are interpreted by Gustavo Garzón, María Onetto, Luis Ziembrowski, Claudio Da Passano, Luis Campos, Gabo Correa, Juan Isola, Agustín Ritano, María Ucedo and Luciana Dulitzky.

Regarding the selection criteria of the works, Melingo explains: “since 2019, when we started with our management, we understood that programming is the most important thing. That is why we turn to the most valued and beloved playwrights, directors, actresses and actors of our national theater scene ”. And, as a scoop, he adds that the cycle proposal will be added Earthly (Kartun’s celebrated and award-winning staging that recreates the biblical story of Cain and Abel). The latter, as stated, “will start in March in a formal manner, and there we will have the cardboard full.”

-What expectations do you have now that 50% capacity has been enabled?

-We take it as a challenge. We must and we have the obligation to be aware of the care, at least until the sun rises in this worn out humanity … As for the public in the rooms we understand that there is no other option than to recognize that personal responsibility towards the other is a sacred agreement. The communion that theater means always requires valuing life and respecting it in all senses. We appreciate the seriousness and responsibility with which the public is taking it.

What plans do you have for the 2021 schedule?

-We are starting rehearsals for a play that he adapted and directs Daniel Veronese. The idea is to program it to release in the second half of the year. What more can we ask for !? that more and more people come because the theater is safe and does well.

Tickets for all shows can be purchased through Alternativa Teatral.
