The Basel International Theatre Festival is sure to put you in a good mood: from August 20th, there will be exciting productions for every taste, a skate park on the barracks site, workshops, concerts, podiums and even free childcare.
Do you know the feeling of helplessness that comes over you every now and then in view of the current world situation? There is a remedy for that. It is called theater. Between August 20th and September 1st, you will be offered a lot of it at the Basel Theater Festival, which not only offers 11 productions, 10 short pieces, a Festival LAB for artists, concerts, discussions, podiums and workshops, but also a lot of atmosphere, fun and broadening of horizons.
Entertainment for every taste
The program is full of variety, sometimes radical, sometimes tender, humorous and overwhelming. It places value on being politically astute, aesthetically contemporary and entertaining at the same time – enriching and beneficial in equal measure. The festival will be opened on August 20th in the barracks by Lola Arias, winner of the 2024 Ibsen Prize. You will also meet renowned names such as Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker & Radouan Mriziga, Miet Warlop, Alice Ripoll, Harald Beharie and Ivo Dimchev – not only on, but also off the stage. In addition to the stage program, the theater festival offers various opportunities to get in touch with one another.

For example, audience discussions take place after individual performances. “Let’s talk” is the name of the format in which you can learn more about the work of the artists, their development and motivation. If you like to sweat, you can immerse yourself in the world of movement of Alice Ripoll on August 21st, for example – before the piece it’s “Let’s dance” – don’t forget your towel! A special highlight is the skate park on the barracks area, which, based on the production “Skatepark” by Mette Ingvartsen, allows everyone to skate on site. Professionals and beginners are equally welcome here!
Affordable theatre for everyone
Workshops, master classes and digital audio introductions are also offered during the festival and – a highlight for young parents – thanks to the free childcare at the Kasernentreff neighborhood meeting point, they can immerse themselves in the world of theater for two weekends without kids. Last but not least: Because the theater festival wants to get everyone excited about theater, you can choose from three price categories under the motto “Pay what you can”.
