Theater Vrij will perform ‘Autumn’ on World Alzheimer’s Day, Thursday 21 September, in De Poort at Polderlaan 1 in Oud-Beijerland, from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Admission is free, registration (before September 18) is necessary because of the catering. Afterwards there is a follow-up with a snack and a drink. The afternoon is organized by ‘Together Dementia Friendly Hoeksche Waard’. Conny Brouwer, Dementia Chain Care Coordinator, has more information on 0628771217.
The performance is for anyone interested in a dementia-friendly society. In ‘Autumn’, actors Antoinette van der Velde and John Schneider look at everyday human worry about aging with humor that puts things into perspective. It is a comical, but at the same time realistic performance with a smile and a tear, topical and recognizable.
‘Autumn’ was written by Toneelgroep Het Volk and adapted by Theatergroep Vrij. The premiere was in 2019. The performance is played in small theaters for healthcare institutions and Odensehuizen (volunteers and informal carers), among others.
In the Netherlands, one in five (in the Hoeksche Waard one in four) people suffer from dementia. Experts in the field of dementia recommend ‘Autumn’ for anyone who wants to get acquainted with this disease in a light-hearted way.
During the performance it becomes clear that the husband has this disease. Subtly and with humor, all kinds of facets – you can also say ‘symptoms of the disease’ – come into the limelight. The characters, Herman and Pauline, give an insight into the quality of their relationship (which has lasted for 40 years) and how it changes when Herman develops dementia.
Straightforward, but also subtle and recognizable, the difficulties that the spouses face are brought to the fore. The performance clearly shows what the person with dementia experiences and also what a caregiver experiences. The essence of audience reactions is ‘entertaining and educational’.
