How to live after the irreparable?
Anna is forty years old, she is a French journalist who has been expatriated in the United States for four years. She leads an easy life in a big east coast city with her husband and daughter, until the day she is killed while on a business trip to Houston. A thug named Michael Ellis is arrested and sentenced to death. Anna receives a visit from Clémence, a volunteer for an association that puts the victims’ families in contact with the convicted: she brings her a letter from Michael Ellis, who wishes to get in touch with her.
A lesson in justice and humanity
Will Anna be able to accept this correspondence? What will she find she has to say to this man? What exactly is she guilty of? And why is Clémence so insistent on creating this impossible bond?
When asked what prompted her to write this comedy, Violaine Arsac replied: “I wanted to write this comedy after seeing a documentary on restorative justice in the United States which tells the story of a woman who corresponded for 15 years with the “man who killed his daughter. How can we move from violence to forgiveness? How can we discover the best in ourselves and in others, and thus continue to find meaning and beauty in life?” A story full of hope and light that bets on the best part of men.
