After almost 40 years, the international festival “Theater der Welt” returns to the Rhine-Main area. Theater is shown in all its facets on stages, festivals or in workshops – and even on some benches.

Offenbach and Frankfurt are in theater fever. Germany’s largest international theater festival is a guest, and that means: 18 days full of performances and festivals, with artists from 26 regions of the world, at 12 locations in Frankfurt and Offenbach.

The “Theater der Welt” takes place every three years, always in a different city or region of Germany. In 1985 it was already in the Rhine-Main area, for its 16th edition it is now coming back. And the program offers some highlights.

“Theater der Welt”-Festival 2023

The international theater festival runs from June 29 to July 16 at various locations in Offenbach and Frankfurt. Theater, workshops, festivals and co.: The comprehensive and partly free program is on the Festival website to find.

The festival is initiated and realized by the Schauspiel Frankfurt, the Künstler*innenhaus Mousonturm and the Museum Angewandte Kunst.

Opening party on the Main

The international theater festival starts on June 29th with a colorful opening party right on the Main in Offenbach. After an opening ceremony at 6 p.m., the United Institutes, a collective formed especially for the festival by students from the Offenbach University of Art and Design and the Städelschule, will be showing their installations “Landing Incubators”.

With the four research stations along the Main, the collective shows different, critical perspectives on planet Earth and its possible rescue. The actual party starts at 9 p.m., which according to the program should be “loud and wild”. The bands “Baby of Control” and “What Are People For?” will provide the appropriate music on the opening night of the festival. Admission is from 5.30 p.m., admission is free.

International street festival in Offenbach

In Offenbach, the celebrations can continue on the first weekend in July. On the occasion of the international street festival on July 1st, the city center is transformed into a large stage with a colorful theater programme.

Artists, jugglers and international street theater ensembles perform in the Stadthof, Aliceplatz and Frankfurter Strasse. Among others, the magician duo Siegfried & Joy will be there, whose art of illusion should not only impress children and young people.

Dance-Battle “Rep. Your City” im Capitol Offenbach

The diversity of dance will be celebrated at this year’s “Theater der Welt” festival in the form of a dance battle. Dancers from all over Europe will compete against each other on July 15th in the Capitol in Offenbach.

The most diverse dance styles meet and compete for the coveted prize of the jury. The beats of the DJs shouldn’t let the audience stand still either. Incidentally, registration for the battle is possible from 1 p.m. on site – everyone can take part, whether beginner or advanced.

“Archaeological Opera Chornobyldorf” in the Bockenheimer Depot

It will be dystopian at the Bockenheimer Depot in Frankfurt: on two dates in July, the experimental music theater “Chornobyldorf” will show a post-apocalyptic civilization and post-industrial landscapes. The team around the composers Roman Grygoriv and Illia Razumeiko brings the spectacle to the stage with videos, singing, dancing and sounds. A public discussion in English will also be offered after both performance dates.

Taking a break with “Meet Me at the Bench” at the Frankfurt Hauptwache

If you need a break between all the hustle and bustle of the festival, you will find what you are looking for in several places in the public space between the various events. Selected benches invite you to linger with “Meet me at the Bench”. With the app developed by the performance collective LIGNA, those taking a break can listen to the stories and fates of artists who live in exile or are fleeing during the festival.

For example: “Die Lange Bank” in the middle of the Hauptwache in downtown Frankfurt. The installation of the Deutsches Architekturmuseum (DAM) is there for sitting, relaxing or for inspiration, but is also intended to explore and use urban spaces in a new way. At the opening of the “Langen Bank” on June 30th, the performance artists Tedious Works will appear there at 3 p.m. and present their “Exercise in Pausing” as part of the theater festival.
