Bremen/Berlin (MH) – The former general director of the Bremen theater, Klaus Pierwoß, is dead. As the Senate of the Hanseatic city announced on Monday, Pierwoß died on Sunday. He was 79 years old. “In the 13 years of his artistic directorship, he maneuvered the theater through difficult cultural-political times with full commitment and with great courage – always with the aim of preserving the four-section house in its entirety,” explained Mayor and Senator for Culture Andreas Bovenschulte (SPD).

Born in Berge, Lower Saxony, in 1942, Pierwoss studied theater and German in Cologne, Berlin and Vienna. In 1971 he became dramaturg at the Landestheater Tübingen and in 1975 at the Nationaltheater Mannheim. Three years later he returned to Tübingen as artistic director. In 1985 he succeeded Jürgen Flimm as head of the Cologne theater.
From 1994 to 2007 Pierwoß directed the Bremen Theater. He formed the house into a nationally appreciated and recognized venue, for example through numerous music theater premieres. From 1995 to 2003, occupancy increased by 17 percent. At the end of his term of office, the theater was voted “Opera House of the Year” by the magazine “Opernwelt”. Pierwoss received the Federal Cross of Merit for his “commitment that went far beyond the usual level”. The house, which was renamed Theater Bremen in 2007, made him an honorary member in 2013.
