The Theater Company of Liberated People experiences these experiences and shares them in the play “Alchemy and Transmutation”, which is presented on Thursdays at the Casa del “Indio” Fernández.

A project headed by Arturo Morell, the director, producer and author of this proposal in which he incorporates women who have been released from prison, so that they can tell their story and experience in each performance that ecstasy of shouting from the four winds their desire for freedom, the dignity of one’s being and the hope of remaining standing.
The different spaces of the patio of the house of “Indio” Fernández are used to the maximum to convey the oppressive atmosphere of the Holy Inquisition and then enter the prison environment of today.
At the beginning of the work, we find ourselves in the catacombs of the Inquisition. The smoke, the prayers and the penances take us to that time of violence and confinement that is related to the current situation in prisons. At the entrance, a small bubbling pond, a hooded monk who condemns, announces and invites us to begin the journey to cross the threshold and observe, at the beginning, women lying on the stone stairs chained and suffering. In the present, women in prison clothing represent lived stories; They tell the public or talk to each other about the reasons that led them to prison; of injustices or mistakes committed. Their worries and worries are intertwined with the rehearsal of the play, a space to get out of the routine and find a means of expression. They sing and shout their truths, face the conflicts they have among themselves and look for a light.
As part of the creative team is Héctor Barragán in the original music, Roberto Blázquez in the scenic coordination and Sandra Martínez, a powerful actress and production coordinator.
Reality and fiction are embodied in 21 women who have been released from prison and found another reason to live in theater. They act with overflowing energy, transmit their truth and shake our interior. They move and revolt us; They question us and open our eyes to a painful reality.
“Alchemy and Transmutation” premiered at the Cervantino International Festival in 2018 as part of the project A cry for freedom, which Arturo Morell has directed for almost 20 years. She performed with professional actresses and also with the inmates of the women’s area of Cereso Guanajuato. They have given performances in other spaces, and now the Liberated People’s Theater Company began its season on August 10. The work is also presented with the Theater Company of Persons Deprived of Liberty as a mirror project with scope inside and outside of prison.
Arturo Morell ventured to work with people deprived of their liberty in different prisons and created the show “A cry for freedom”, which includes more than 300 people on stage. Men and women imprisoned in the Santa Marta Acatitla Prison were directed by Arturo Morell to present the work inspired by the musical “El Hombre de la Mancha”, in which more than 3 thousand inmates have participated.
Living the experience of going to the prison and witnessing this spectacle, going through all the controls and complying with the clothing requirements, is a shocking and revitalizing experience. Now, with “Alchemy and Transmutation”, we are once again shaken within ourselves. The energy that is generated is transmitted to the spectators with force, creating an empathy that only theater, as a collective phenomenon, can create.
