‘The Zone of Interest’ has won the Oscar for best international film at the 96th edition of the awards given annually by the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Jonathan Glazer’s film, focused on the daily life of Auschwitz commander Rudolf Höss and his family, left ‘The Snow Society’, the Spanish film directed by Juan Antonio Bayona, without an award.

Bayona’s film, which recounts the real tragedy of Flight 571 of the Uruguayan Air Force that took place in 1972 and in which 29 people died, was nominated for the award for best international film along with the Japanese film ‘Perfect Days’, from Win Wenders; the Italian ‘I Captain’, by Matteo Garrone; and the German ‘Teachers’ Room’, by Ilker Çatak.

The French film ‘Anatomy of a Fall’ by Justine Triet was not among the nominees, which left Bayona’s film without an award at the Golden Globes and the Critics Choice Awards and which is among the nominees for best film. And the French Academy decided that its representative at the Oscars would be ‘Slow Fire’, a culinary film directed by Tran Anh Hung and starring Juliette Binoche and Benoît Magimel, which was left out of the five nominees.

In addition, Bayona’s film, which was the big winner at the last edition of the Goya Awards with 12 awards, including best film and best direction, was nominated for the best makeup and hairdressing award for Ana López-Puigcerver’s work, Belén López-Puigcerver, David Martí, Montse Ribé. In this category, the award finally went to Nadia Stacey, Mark Coulier and Robert Hammond for ‘Poor Creatures’.

The 96th Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Awards Gala in Hollywood was held at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles and was hosted for the fourth time by comedian and presenter Jimmy Kimmel.
