China’s Zhurong rover begins to traverse the complex terrain of Mars. China’s Space Agency said Zhurong began exploring an area filled with rocks, craters and sand dunes Friday. Previously, Zhurong had completed a survey on the second sand dune.
Zhurong has worked on the Martian surface for 75 Martian days and has traveled 708 meters. While the orbiter has been in orbit for 372 days. So far, the rover and orbiter are working under normal conditions.
China’s Tianwen-1 spacecraft, consisting of an orbiter, rover and lander, launched on July 23, 2020. The lander carrying the rover landed in the southern part of Utopia Planitia, a vast plain in the northern hemisphere of Mars on May 15.
