The ZDF report on New York by Johannes Hano

Listen to the article:

The report by ZDF New York correspondent Johannes Hano is a journey through the metropolis, its history and its crises.

For “New York, New York” – January 2, 2023 at 19:25 on ZDF – meet people whose fates are closely linked to the city.

They come from Cuba, Germany, Taiwan, the Dominican Republic, Harlem, Oregon, and they share one thing that defines New York’s character and success: the will to make it and never give up.

Johannes Hano meets women and men: legends of hip hop and street art, drug dealers, influencers, construction workers and bankers.

The report is also a tribute to the people who make this city what it still is for many: a beacon of hope.

The film is already available in the ZDF media library.

One of them is Andrew, who came from Taiwan with his parents and who some say helped trigger the global financial meltdown in 2008.

He has reinvented himself as a tour guide and tourism entrepreneur. Immigrants are what make the city so successful, he says, because they’ve learned to start from scratch.

Influencer Corinne Monson also has a say – among others. She works every day to revive the myth of New York.

For her Instagram blog, she roams the city looking for new trends in the art, culture and club scene. To attract attention in the city, you always have to come up with something special.

Competition is fierce when it comes to vying for the attention of Instagramers, as they would place millions of free ads around the world with their selfies.

“If you can make it here, you can make it anywhere,” says Sebastian Steinau, who came to New York from Sauerland as a real estate agent.

He wanted to compete with the best. Today he is one of the best luxury real estate brokers in New York.
