The Government of the State of Mexico, through the Ministry of the Environment (SMA) and the State Commission of Natural Parks and Fauna (Cepanaf), announced the arrival in Edoméx of three specimens of California Condor (Gymnogyps californianus), guests of honor and new members of the “Zacango Family”.
Thanks to the collaboration between the governments of Baja California, the State of Mexico and the United States of America, as well as the personnel of the San Pedro Mártir National Park, the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (CONANP), the Chapultepec Zoo and Secretary of the National Navy (SEMAR), the transfer to the State of Mexico of three specimens belonging to the Mexico-United States Binational Program for the Recovery and Conservation of the species was achieved.
Since the beginning of the administration of Governor Alfredo Del Mazo Maza, Cepanaf has been part of said program, for which the remodeling project was authorized to make an ideal shelter in the Ecological Park “Zacango” and prepare the arrival of the specimens of this species, complying with the corresponding norms and specifications; the area located in the bird zone is ready since 2019 to receive its new guests.
Born in captivity at the Chapultepec Zoo, from the Protected Natural Area of San Pedro Mártir, in Baja California, the three specimens, Ashkii, Mimitec and Nakai, six years old, are part of the Captive Reproduction program for this species , which seeks to preserve specimens and release them.
Under the supervision of Jorge Rescala Pérez, Secretary of the State Environment, the necessary regulations and requirements have been followed up to ensure that the three specimens are guests of Zacangoand promote environmental education in the State of Mexico, strengthening conservation actions for fauna under human care in the entity.
The director of Cepanaf, Napoleón Fillat Ordóñez, reported that since July 31, 2019, the “Zacango” Ecological Park was approved for the reception of the specimens, however the pandemic delayed the transfers and it is until July 2022, that finally They arrive at their new home.
