The Youngest Player in American Team Sports: Kimbrough’s Historic Debut in the Second League

The whole stadium applauded him when he was about to make a substitution behind the sideline in the 87th minute. Some of the American fans stood up and gave a standing ovation. There was a reason: in 13 years, 7 months and 13 days, no one had played in the second league in America. According to CNN, Kimbrough is the youngest player in American team sports ever.

He was calm, he didn’t mess anything up. “I was a bit nervous before the substitution, but once I got on the pitch it was all about football. About doing something I love. Just football. A simple thing,” confessed the young striker at the end of his day.

The native of California topped Axel Kei in the American second league: the striker with African roots was two months older than Kimbrough for the first time in his major the year before last. For the record, today 15-year-old Kei regularly plays for the Salt Lake B League.

Kimbrough has always paid for an unusual kid and an unstoppable shooter. For example, two years ago, he scored 27 goals in 31 matches for the thirteenth team. He jumped age groups quite routinely and this summer signed his first professional contract with Sacramento, which is the current leader of the second division Western Conference.

“This is beautiful about my work. We gave the talent from the academy a chance in A, moreover in our stadium in front of our fans. It was this combination that got the fans excited,” said Sacramento coach Mark Briggs.

Just for comparison: the youngest player in the Czech first league is Dominik Mašek, he made his debut at 15 years, 10 months and 18 days. Ironically, he finished playing big football before he was thirty, he was unlucky to get injured. Since the summer, he has been an assistant coach of Příbram Bék.
