The young age gets diabetes from a hobby of sweet eating and drinking

JawaPos.com – Diabetes is caused by lifestyle, one of which is due to the intake of sugary foods and drinks. GenZ and current millennials love to eat viral foods and drinks with a high-sugar flavor. Unsurprisingly, today’s young people already have diabetes.

On the occasion of World Diabetes Day, the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) shows that 1 in 11 adults in Indonesia, aged 20 to 79, is a person with diabetes and is expected to continue to increase. Indonesians are urged to be more concerned about the dangers of diabetes through educational activities on the importance of routine blood glucose monitoring so that they can continue their activities smoothly.

“Every year we get the fact that the number of diabetes in Indonesia and around the world is still increasing, due to various factors, particularly lifestyle. We hope that people can control their blood sugar level, so that their quality of life can improve and daily activities can function well, “explained Director of Special Needs and Healthy Lifestyle Nutrition KALBE Nutritionals, Diabetesol, Tunghadi Indra, virtually, on Thursday (10/11).

prof. Dr. dr. Ketut Suastika, Sp.PD-KEMD, FINASIM, president of the Indonesian Endocrinology Association (PERKENI) said diabetes is the third leading cause of death in Indonesia. And this disease can lead to various complications.

“We are aware that diabetes cannot be cured and can cause complications (stroke, heart, kidney failure),” he explained.

Impact of sweet drinks and food

According to Prof. Ketut Suastika, the growing number of diabetes cases in Indonesia is mainly due to the current generation having easier access to unhealthy sweet foods and drinks. Therefore, the Indonesian people must be vigilant and maintain a healthy lifestyle and diet.

“Healthy eating patterns by reducing sugary foods and drinks and then regularly checking blood sugar, diabetic diet as needed, exercise for 30 minutes each day, people with diabetes should always be happy to improve their quality of life,” said the prof. Ketut.

Prevalence of diabetic patients

The results of basic health research from 2018 show that the three areas with the highest prevalence of diabetes mellitus are DKI Jakarta (3.4%), East Kalimantan (3.1%) and Jogjakarta (3.1%). Furthermore, the prevalence rate in women also increased in 2018 from 1.70% to 1.78%. Not only that, the data also shows that the prevalence rate in rural areas increased from 1% to 1.01% in 2018.
