Galicia Prepares for Winter with Advanced Health Plan
Galician authorities are taking proactive steps to prepare for the impending winter season, unveiling a comprehensive health plan designed to combat the spread of influenza and other respiratory illnesses. The plan, approved by the Council of Galicia on December 2nd, 2024, prioritizes early detection, predictive modeling, and robust resource allocation.
"We are committed to safeguarding public health during the winter months," declared Galicia’s District President, Alfonso Rueda, in a press conference following the council meeting. "This plan utilizes innovative strategies to effectively address the challenges posed by influenza and other respiratory viruses."
A key element of the plan involves the establishment of 70 "sentinel pharmacies" strategically located throughout the region. These pharmacies will play a vital role in monitoring the prevalence of influenza by tracking sales of flu tests and antigen tests.

This crucial data, combined with flu consultations and hospital admissions, will feed into an advanced predictive model powered by artificial intelligence (AI). This AI-driven system will analyze patterns and trends, enabling Galician health authorities to anticipate potential outbreaks and allocate resources accordingly.
Financial commitments underpin this proactive approach. The Galician government has earmarked 11 million euros for influenza and respiratory disease vaccines, along with an additional 8 million euros dedicated to staff costs.
"Six hundred fifteen thousand individuals have already received the vaccine," confirmed President Rueda, emphasizing the ongoing nature of the flu vaccination campaign.
Beyond influenza preparedness, the newly approved plan allocates 75 million euros for medications addressing other critical health conditions. This includes 40 million euros for antiretroviral treatments for HIV, 20 million euros for multiple sclerosis medications, and 15 million euros for monoclonal antibodies targeting inflammatory diseases.
This multifaceted winter health plan underscores Galicia’s commitment to a proactive, data-driven approach to public health, safeguarding the well-being of its citizens against the challenges of the coming season.
