Meta, the company formerly known as Facebook, has invested heavily in the so-called “metaverse” project in recent years. The goal is to equip people around the world with VR glasses and bring them together in a virtual space, but not everyone has been impressed with the progress made so far.
Phil Spencer is among many who are skeptical of the metaverse project.
During the Wall Street Journal lecture Live technology Phil Spencer described the metaverse as “a poor quality video game”. Right now, it’s not something he wants to spend his time on.
– To date I would say that it is a poorly made video game. If I think about games, for years we have been gathering people in three-dimensional spaces where they can save the world from alien invasion or assault castles. Building a metaverse that looks like a boardroom … that’s not where I want to spend most of my time.
However, the Xbox boss pointed out that the metaverse concept is still early in development and will likely improve over time.
– I tease a little when I call it a bad game. I just think we’re early. Over time, it will end up looking a lot more like video games than some of the models I’ve seen for the metaverse today, Spencer concluded.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed this week (via CNBC) that the costs associated with developing the company’s metaverse will only increase in 2023. Zuckerberg is determined the project will pay off in the future, but has begun to face greater opposition from shareholders.
