The Xbox 360 app store will end next year
It will not be possible to download new games and game add-ons to the console
Already purchased games will not be affected
The Xbox 360 was introduced in 2005 and became Microsoft’s best-selling game console in history, selling over 85 million units, a feat that none of its successors could repeat. There are still a large number of functional and used specimens in the world, but their users face one fundamental limitation.
The Xbox 360 Store will end next year
Microsoft announced last week that it will shut down the Xbox 360 Store next year, which is one of the main sources of new games for the console. The store will be shut down on July 29, 2024, after which it will no longer be available on the console itself or on the Marketplace.xbox.com website. The shutdown of the digital store for Xbox 360 could be expected, the console itself reached its majority this year, official support ended in 2016.
What does shutting down the store mean for current players?
For most players, nothing will change – already purchased Xbox 360 games will continue to be playable, including their expansions. If you delete any of the digitally purchased games from your console, you will be able to download and install them again as before. Backwards compatibility of older Xbox 360 games on newer consoles will not be affected either – existing Xbox 360 games will remain in their stores. The ability to play multiplayer online games will not change either, but here it is necessary that their creators still operate the servers on which the games run.
So what will actually change?
After July 29 next year, users will not be able to purchase new Xbox 360 games or add-ons to already installed games. Some games are even in danger of completely disappearing from the world. VideoGamesChronicle calculated that the Xbox Live Arcade section (in North America) contains 619 games, 220 of which are not backwards compatible, and were never available on physical media. So there will be no way to get them after July 29th next year.
To make matters worse, Microsoft will shut down the Movies & TV application on the same date, so the Xbox 360 will also come with a store of movies and TV shows.
