He longed to study at FAMU, but was not accepted. He eventually graduated from the Faculty of Education in České Budějovice and after graduating he worked as a teacher at a primary school in Písek.

He later worked as an editor of Květy magazine and in the early 1980s he established himself as a writer. At the same time, however, he worked as a playwright at the Film Studio in Barrandov.

After that, he continued to devote himself only to literary and screenwriting.

He soon became a popular author of children’s books. He was praised for his ability to really describe the period of adolescence associated with establishing the first relationships and troubles with love or, for example, with the choice of profession. These are just random works of Metráček or Impossibly Fat Girl, Millionaire Girl, Nebreč, Lucie, Daisies for the Chateau Lady or The Valley of Beautiful Frogs. Many of his works have been successfully filmed.

As Rudolf himself admitted in an interview, his own children were the model for some of these stories.

From the end of the seventies, he also began to write prose for adults. For the most part, these are intimate psychologizing stories, such as Operation My Daughter, Pajamas After the Dead.
