One of the measures to speed up the recovery is a so-called three-way meeting between victims, municipalities and a ‘recovery team’ of the Tax and Customs Administration, which has been specially created for financial compensation of affected parents. The idea behind this is that these parents only have to tell their story once, rather than against each authority again. To date, these three conversations have not yet taken place.
Another goal is to be the first to help the most severely affected parents in the follow-up process. This concerns, for example, people with large debts, evictions, psychological problems and families in which one or more children have been removed from their home. Often there are multiple problems within a family.
Impatient
According to the Ministry of Finance, victims in an acute or distressing situation can turn to the recovery team of the tax authorities or municipality. But the VNG says it has so far been able to do little to help this group first. To speed up the process, municipalities are ringing the bell time and again, as does in February.
Nevertheless, the VNG does not blame State Secretary De Vries. “She is hard at work and very willing, there is really no blame,” says Heijkoop. “I’m just impatient and we as municipalities want to help faster.”
