The worst flaws of each generation of Pokémon games

In more than 20 years, Pokémon has evolved a lot. New creatures have appeared generation after generation, new mechanics have emerged and the graphics have been modernized from version to version. And while some new features work and enjoy, others are not really to the liking of gamers.

First generation

The first generation of Pokémon, the one that started the phenomenon, has a special place in the hearts of fans, but these versions have a real problem: the bugs. No one really holds it against Game Freak since these are the first games, but some of these malfunctions can go as far as erasing a save and causing players to lose an entire adventure. Yes, we are talking about you in particular MissingNo. Not to mention the hours wasted trying to find Mew because of false rumors …

Second generation

If the action of Pokémon Or, Argent and Cristal mainly takes place in Johto, the game continues in Kanto after the first ending and many new Pokémon of this second generation are there! Therefore, you have to complete the game and the Pokémon League to find these never-before-seen creatures, rather than having them during the main adventure. Worse, a very large majority of trainers that we cross paths with only have Kanto Pokémon.

Third generation

The water routes are far too plentiful, and at certain points in the game you need to have a large number of Pokémon on your team with a special capsule in their attack abilities. No less than eight Special Capsules (CS) are present in the game: Cup, Flight, Surf, Strength, Flash, Rockburst, Stunt and Dive. Towards the end of the adventure, before the Pokémon Council, no less than five CS are required at the same time to be able to advance.

Fourth generation

Again, to complete the game and go as far as possible in the adventure, you have to use many CS: six mandatory. But one of the most negative points of this fourth generation of Pokémon is the general slowness, whether in combat, mechanics or just movement. The remakes Sparkling Diamond and Sparkling Pearls coming in November 2021 could solve these problems with new features and more content.

Fifth generation

One of the worst flaws of the Unova region is the linearity of its versions Blanche and Noire. Despite very many roads and passages, it is impossible to follow any other path than that dictated by the game. A lack of freedom which did not please all the players of this fifth generation. However, the story is loaded and there are many things to do … Which is all the more unfortunate.

Sixth generation

The main problem of Pokémon X and AND is its difficulty. Or rather, its absence. Both of these versions are way too easy, whether it’s Arena Champions, Cross Trainers on the way, or this new Multi Exp mechanic that allows all Pokémon on the team to gain experience during battles, even if they don’t participate.

Seventh generation

If the story of Pokémon Moon and Soleil is one of the best in the entire franchise, it is considerably hampered by all the cuts that these two versions offer to players. Whether it is the novelty of the Pokédex, which, inhabited by the Pokémon Motisma, becomes the Motisma-Dex and swings advice after advice without stopping, or the characters encountered along the way that make things a bit easier. This seventh generation takes players by the hand far too often.

Eighth generation

The biggest problem of Pokemon Sword and Shield created a great controversy on the side of the fans: the absence of the National Pokédex! The number of Pokémon from older generations is starving and it is impossible to transfer them from previous games …

Fortunately, the DLC addressed this issue, and players were able to find their favorite creatures in the Galar region.
