The financial situation of the Amstelveen Cobra Museum of Modern Art turns out to be much more worrying than the museum had told the municipality. This is what the council of Amstelveen writes in a letter to the city council NH News.

The municipality is aware that the Cobra Museum has been in dire straits since 2018. Disappointing visitor numbers have led to a structural financial deficit in recent years. Last year the museum suffered a loss of 350,000 euros, but this year the deficit appears to be even greater.

Grant award postponed

In 2021, the city council decided that from now on the Cobra Museum can apply for a multi-year subsidy every four years. In response to the worrying financial figures for 2022, the Board postponed the granting of subsidies a few months ago. The risk of allocating 1.2 million euros annually would be too great.

Shocked by the numbers

In recent months, the museum has had the opportunity to come up with an explanation for the loss and an improvement plan. The municipal council also wanted to see a forecast for the financial situation for 2023. That only came a few hours before a follow-up meeting with the museum took place, says the board.

The college was shocked by those figures. “The expected deficit for 2023 turned out to be much larger than expected, namely 700,000 euros,” the council letter states. The museum would also not have come up with a realistic improvement plan.

The museum says that the shortage is partly due to the fact that there were 30,000 fewer visitors than expected from June to mid-July. Costs are also much higher. The council is considering next steps.
