The world’s thinnest skyscraper in New York, the Steinway Tower

In New York, a bizarrely high and especially thin skyscraper has recently been erected at the Central Park, designed by SHoP Architects. The Steinway Tower, as the building is called, is the world’s thinnest skyscraper and the second tallest residential building in the world. Project developer Hayes Davidson now offers a unique view of the tower.

At the end of the nineteenth century, the world’s first skyscrapers were built in New York and Chicago. At the beginning of the twentieth century, they also sprang up like mushrooms in other cities. Cities grew explosively and the skyscraper phenomenon was the solution to the lack of living space for all people who moved to the city. In addition, tall buildings were seen symbolizing power and greatness. The Empire State Building was built in 1932 and was the tallest building in the world for 40 years. To put it in perspective, the Steinway Tower is 435 meters high.

Steinway Tower: a bizarrely luxurious, tall and thin skyscraper

The new skyscraper at Central Park in New York is located at 111 west 57th street to be precise. With the design, SHoP Architects has paid tribute to the classic skyscrapers of New York. The facade of terracotta, bronze and glass recalls the art deco history of the city. In addition to its height, the building is particularly striking for its thin design. The Steinway Tower is only 18 meters wide. With a width-to-height ratio of 1:24, it is the world’s thinnest skyscraper.

In addition to a swimming pool, sports center, spa with sauna and a lounge with outdoor terrace, the skyscraper is primarily intended for living. Whether that is affordable for the common man is another matter. The apartments vary in price from 14 million euros to 51 million euros. Do you have a nice luxury apartment with a reasonable view, just to throw out some understatements. The smallest apartment has an area of 417 square meters, the largest house of 660 square meters.

New York, Central Park, 111 West 57th Street

Also known as 111 West 57th Street, the building is 82 stories high. The skyscraper has taken advantage of the ‘height rights’ of the Steinway Hall, a 96-year-old building, which houses concert halls and piano showrooms for the famous Steinway & Sons, which was bought in 2013 by the developers of 111 West 57th. View the released photos below. The Steinway Tower is already in use, but construction of the upper floors will not be fully completed until the end of 2020.
