The world’s oldest tree has fallen – heavy snow broke Old Tjikko

He was to guide a photographer to the well-known tree earlier this week when he discovered that the top of the 9,500-year-old tree had snapped.

– About a meter is gone, says Tommy Lönnebacke.

“Will Survive”

This year’s winter has been unusually hard in the mountains in northern Dalarna. Large amounts of heavy snow have for a long time been frozen to the tree branches with lots of top breaks as a result.

– But Old Tjikko will survive. It is the root system that is 9,500 years old and it has survived, but the tree itself looks completely different now, says Tommy Lönnebacke.

In the clip: See how the tree looked before and how it looks today!
