An An was euthanized at the age of 35, which is equivalent to a human lifespan of 105 years.
An An was born in the wild in Sichuan, in 1999 the Chinese government gave An An together with the female panda Jia Jia as a gift Hong Kong – as you know, pandas are China’s national treasure, but the country lends these animals to other countries to build political friendships around the world.
Ocean Park representatives say the euthanasia decision was made after An An showed “constant signs of deterioration” over the past few weeks. The animal was no longer eating solid food and was subsisting only on drinks. The pandas collectively observed that An An’s activity level was critically low, while the rest time was getting longer and longer.
Park management ultimately decided to euthanize the panda to “prevent further suffering,” the statement said.
“An An brought us very fond memories with many heart-warming moments. We will miss his wit and playfulness greatly,” said Paolo Pong, chairman of Ocean Park Corporation.
An An’s mate, Jia Jia, died in 2016 at the age of 38, becoming the oldest female panda living in captivity. There are two pandas left in the “Ocean Park” zoo – female Ying Ying and male Le Le.
The average lifespan of pandas in the wild is 14-20 years, but they can live much longer in captivity, according to research by wildlife conservationists from the World Wildlife Fund.
