The world’s largest plane comes to Linz

Watch out plan spotters! Next Sunday, an Antonov AN-225 is supposed to land in the Upper Austrian capital Linz.

The world’s largest aircraft should land in the Upper Austrian capital on Sunday, at least reports the aviation magazine Austrian Wings. The gigantic, six-engine Antonov AN-225 apparently lands at Linz Airport on Sunday afternoon.

An official confirmation from Linz Airport about the visit of the machine is still pending, according to the information that has become known so far, the arrival of the six-jet engine with the identification UR-82060 is expected in the afternoon.

There is only one single, airworthy specimen of the AN-225 in the world. The first flight of the machine took place on December 21, 1988. The AN-225 was intended as a transport aircraft for the Soviet Buran space glider. In April 1994, the aircraft was initially mothballed after the Buran space program was discontinued. The aircraft was only reactivated in 2001 and is currently used worldwide as a means of transport for special tasks by the Ukrainian Antonov Airlines.
