Cassius, a male saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus), died in the Australian Marineland Crocodile Park. His exact age is unknown, but ophthalmologists believe he was over 110 years old at the time of his death.
The crocodile was born and lived most of his life in the country, attacking the stock of local residents and motor boats. In the 1980s, he was captured and transported to a reserve, where he continued to grow: the length of Cassius reached 5.48 m, and his weight exceeded a ton. Saltwater crocodiles, one of the largest living predators on the planet, are second in size only to some sharks and toothed whales. Crocodylus porosus is also one of the oldest crocodile species, appearing between 12 and 6 million years ago. Their maximum life span in our time is about 70 years, but they can exceed 100.
In 2011, Cassius was entered into the Guinness Book of Records as “the world’s largest crocodile in captivity.”
