The world’s largest commercial communications satellite was launched into space on Friday. A Falcon Heavy missile was deployed to accomplish this. That is the most powerful rocket from Elon Musk’s space company SpaceX.
The Falcon Heavy lifted off from the launch pad at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 11:04 p.m. local time. On board was the heavy Jupiter 3 satellite. It is owned by the American company EchoStar, a global provider of satellite communications.
The Jupiter 3 weighs more than 9 tons, is the size of a bus and, according to the US website Spaceflightnow the heaviest commercial communications satellite ever launched.
The satellite must enter a geostationary orbit around the Earth, writes Spaceflightnow. This means that the satellite appears to be stationary above the earth’s surface.
The benefit of this is that EchoStar reaches more people with fewer satellites, says vice president of corporate communications Sharyn Nerenberg.
The components of the Falcon Heavy rocket, such as the side boosters, landed safely on the designated landing zones after launch. It was SpaceX’s 250th successful launch, the company reports.
