The world’s first car tunnel is in Baden-Württemberg. Hardly anyone who drives through it knows about its long history. Today it is hardly possible to cross different regions without tunnels.
Car tunnels are a quick and easy way to traverse various mountainous regions. Few people would have guessed that the world’s first car tunnel was built in Baden-Württemberg. Many years ago there was only one way to cross the mountains and mountain ranges. You had to take the laborious above-ground route. In order to avoid this long and arduous route, it was decided to build a car tunnel through the mountain.

Stuttgart is not only known for its large companies and brands such as Bosch and Mercedes. It also has a very special location in a cauldron. People quickly settled outside of this basin over the years because the population continued to skyrocket. But if you wanted to go to the city center by car, you first had to conquer the Hasenberg.
The solution was the world’s first car tunnel, which still stands today in Baden-Württemberg. It took a total of two years, from 1894 to 1896, until the Schwabtunnel was finished. For people then and now, the tunnel is an important connection.
Great importance for the entire region: Schwabtunnel
Today the world’s first car tunnel in Baden-Württemberg connects the two inner city districts of Stuttgart South and Stuttgart West. That’s why many cars drive through the tunnel every day, which is of great importance for the city and the entire region. The Schwabtunnel is named after the Stuttgart poet and pastor Gustav Schwab.
It was opened on July 29, 1896 and was not only the first and widest car tunnel in Germany, but also the first tunnel through which a car ever drove. If you think about that, driving through the Schwabtunnel today has a slightly different feeling. The streets in this country also have a long history.
