The world tourism industry lost 1.3 trillion dollars last year / Article / LSM.lv

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the global tourism industry lost $ 1.3 trillion last year due to lost revenue. Even today, almost a third of all tourist destinations in the world are still closed.

Such information was released by the United Nations World Tourism Organization on Monday. It notes that many countries started easing travel restrictions last year, but later had to tighten again due to new strains of the virus and the deteriorating epidemiological situation.

At the beginning of February this year, 69 of the 217 destinations worldwide or 32% were completely closed to international tourism, including 30 destinations in the Asia-Pacific region, 15 in Europe and 11 in Africa. Compared to May, when 75% of destinations in the world were closed, the situation has improved, but it has worsened compared to November, when 27% of destinations were closed to tourists.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, the international tourism industry has been particularly hard hit. Last year, the amount of income lost was more than 11 times greater than the loss suffered in the 2009 global economic crisis.

The number of international tourists fell by one billion or 74% last year, with the sharpest decline in Asia, which was the first to feel the impact of Covid-19.

The World Tourism Organization concludes that last year was “the worst in the history of the tourism business”.
