The world returned from a disaster… The brightest explosion was recorded – Breaking News from Technology – Sözcü

In October 2022, a supernova that exploded 1.9 billion light-years from Earth caught the attention of telescopes. This gamma-ray burst is considered the brightest explosion of all time, and now researchers say it caused major damage to the Earth’s ozone layer for several minutes during the explosion.

“Ozone is partially depleted, temporarily destroyed,” said astronomer Pietro Ubertini of the National Institute of Astrophysics in Rome. According to Ubertini, if the supernova had been closer to Earth, it could have caused a catastrophic event.

Yet the discovery that a supernova this far away could tear apart part of the Earth’s ozone layer and cause damage, even for a few minutes, shows how fragile our planet’s protective measures are. Studies have been carried out for a long time to prevent damage to the ozone layer. Even holes in the ozone caused by human activities such as burning fossil fuels are being combated.

Researchers say it’s rare for distant cosmic events like this supernova to damage the ozone layer and disrupt our atmosphere. However, this discovered explosion is extremely important for learning more about how our planet and its natural systems respond to cosmic events.
