The international community “clearly underestimated” the speed of the Taliban’s seizure of power, says Angela Merkel.
The world community misjudged the development of events in Afghanistan after the withdrawal of the international armed forces from the country. This was stated by German Chancellor Angela Merkel, informs DW on Wednesday 25 August.
According to Merkel, “it was underestimated” how quickly Afghanistan stopped resisting the radical Islamist Taliban movement. The Chancellor acknowledged that the entire international coalition “clearly underestimated” the speed of such developments.
Merkel added that she was shocked by the situation in Afghanistan and called the development of recent days “terrible” and “bitter.” For the people in Afghanistan, this is a “huge tragedy”, especially for those who advocated a free society, the German Chancellor emphasized.
“Our goal should be to preserve as much as possible what we have achieved in terms of changes in Afghanistan over the past 20 years. This is what the international community should talk about with the Taliban,” Merkel summed up.
Earlier, the UN said that Taliban execute civilians and military… The UN became aware of the executions of civilians and soldiers of the Afghan national security forces by members of the Taliban.
