The World Health Organization said that the “Corona” pandemic and critical funding gaps have weakened mental health services on the continent of Africa, at a time of high demand for these services.
A report by the organization indicated that the survey, which included 28 African countries, reported reports of 37% of the countries that participated in it that mental health response plans are partially funded and another 37% reported that there is no money at all.
For her part, Dr. Machidisu Mueti, Director-General of the WHO Regional Office, said that isolation, loss of income and the death of loved ones in addition to the barrage of information about the dangers of the Corona virus can raise stress levels and lead to mental health conditions or exacerbate current cases.
She added that the pandemic revealed that mental health should be an essential part of health services during outbreaks and emergencies.
A report by the organization stated that recent studies on Africa and the Corona epidemic revealed that African countries occupy 15 places with the highest among 30 countries in the world in cases of suicide per 100,000 people.
