The virus spreads mainly through feces and the number of people with diarrhea is currently 24 times higher than normal, according to the Gaza authorities.
Polio is a highly contagious disease that causes paralysis. The virus is transmitted from person to person through contact with the saliva or feces of an infected person. The disease is especially dangerous for younger children.
