The World Health Organization (WHO) has lifted the global state of emergency imposed due to COVID-19. This was reported by Reuters.
“Yesterday the Emergency Committee met for the 15th time and recommended that I declare the end of the emergency. I accepted this advice. The statute of COVID-19 pandemic has been canceled”announced the head of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
The pandemic, which for more than for three years it killed millions of peoplehas caused economic chaos and deepened inequalities, already does not constitute an emergency for global health, the statement said.
“It is with great hope that I announce that COVID-19 has ended as a global health emergency,” Gebreyesus told reporters, estimating that the pandemic killed at least 20 million people – almost three times more than the official estimate.
The WHO declared a global emergency regarding the spread of the coronavirus on January 30, 2020, and a pandemic was declared on March 11.
