Head coach of the Russian national team Valery Karpin declared in an interview with the Football Factory YouTube channel that he has the feeling that the world has gone crazy because of the reaction of the Estonian public to his joint dinner with several players of the national team.
“There were only two footballers at the dinner in Estonia. There were also ex-football players. It’s not even that, no one went there as a football player and as a coach. Just a gathering of old friends. There are thoughts that the world has finally gone crazy, ”said Karpin.
Karpin explained the second place in the RPL “by a miracle, not by merit”
The coach also expressed the hope that after a certain time the resonance around this situation will subside. “Concerning specifically this situation in Estonia, in the end everything will return to normal, some time must pass. Someone’s roof will fall into place, someone still won’t. This is life, experienced and not such things, ”added the mentor of the Russian national team.
On December 31, former Estonian national team player Andrey Stepanov posted a photo on social networks with Karpin, captain of the Estonian national team Konstantin Vasiliev, midfielder Sergei Zenev and several former football players. The act of the players was condemned by the Minister of Culture of Estonia Piret Hartman and the association of fans of the Estonian national team MTU Jalgpallihaigla, and Vasiliev was offered to deprive the captain’s armband in the national team. At the same time, the head of the Estonian Football Union, Aivar Pohlak, stood up for the players and said that it was important not to lose “the right to know people who think differently and the right to meet with them.” Later, the Estonian Football Union circulated in the media an apology from the players of the national team for dinner with Karpin. They expressed regret if they hurt someone’s feelings, and assured that they spoke with Karpin only about football. Last week, during this dinner, the players were criticized by Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas, saying that friendly communication with Karpin cannot be justified by the thesis of the separation of sports and politics.
