The Central Council of the International Floorball Federation (IFF) decided over the weekend to postpone the World Championships for Men scheduled for December 2020 to 2021 due to a pandemic, the IFF informed on Monday.
The relocation of the championship was offered by the tournament organizers in Finland, as it is still not known what the travel restrictions may be in December. Following the IFF’s decision to transfer the championship, the Finnish Floorball Federation will still consider the most appropriate time for the tournament.
The final decision on the 2021 World Cup calendar will be made at the IFF Central Council meeting on September 29.
According to IFF estimates, the international financial impact of the postponement of the World Cup will be about 200-250 thousand Swiss francs (185-230 thousand euros). Therefore, IFF plans to introduce downtime conditions for its office staff for several months, as well as seek to mitigate the negative effects of long-term borrowing and requests for financial assistance to the International Olympic Committee.
The World Championship with the participation of the Latvian national team in 16 teams in Helsinki in 2020 was planned from December 4 to 12.
Earlier, IFF postponed the 2020 U-19 Women’s World Cup. It is also planned to play the U-19 World Championship for men in 2021, but the qualification for the teams of European countries is planned for November 2020 in Italy and Poland.
IFF is still waiting for information about the possibility of organizing qualification tournaments for the 2021 World Championship for Women in Latvia and Poland.
