After eight years, the Hockey World Cup should return. The NHL plans to organize it in 2024. Its representatives at a press conference after meeting with the general managers of the teams revealed the first information.
Overseas profiliga is already starting to work on organizing the tournament, as she would like to organize it in 2 years. Commissioners Gary Bettman and Bill Daly did not reveal much detail, but said one crucial piece of information. The 2016 format will not be repeated.
At that time, they decided to call six national teams and create the remaining two. Team Europe was created, where there were players from eight countries that did not have the teams themselves. The team’s second creation was a selection of North America under the age of 23. In addition, we saw Canada, USA, Czech Republic, Russia, Sweden, Finland at the tournament.
In 2024, only classic national teams will play. However, they could not specify which, or in what format and when exactly it would be played.
We can assume that it will stay with the traditional format with eight teams. In that case, what would be Slovakia’s chances of participation?
Six participants are clear with one question mark – Canada, USA, Finland, Sweden, Czechia a Mask. The question mark may be for the current situation in Russia. However, no one knows what the situation will be in two years.
Who will fill the other two places? It will probably be a duel between Slovakia, Germany a Switzerland. The number of players in the NHL will definitely decide, but also their quality or popularity.
Germany has a strong card in the form of Leon Draisaitl, for fans are also interesting names like Moritz Seider or Tim Stützle. Six Germans are a stable part of the NHL this season.

The Swiss probably have the strongest position and also the most players in profile. About ten of them play more regularly. And they also have strong names like Kevin Fiala, Roman Josi, Nico Hischier or Timo Meier.
Slovakia is currently in the worst position. Only Martin Fehérváry, Erik Černák, Tomáš Tatar and Zdeno Chára play a solid part of the first team and regularly play. The strongest name is Zdeno Chára, but it is very questionable whether he will be part of the NHL in two years.
The ace up our country may be the next generation. Whether it’s Juraj Slafkovský, Šimon Nemec or Filip Mešár, who will be drafted this year and can settle in the first teams within two years and become strong names for the entire league.
There is also hope for more young players who will be drafted this year or next. We should also mention Dalibor Dvorský, in the draft 2023 he estimates him the top ten.
If this young generation can stand out in the NHL and the stars in our country will also become stars overseas, which would be supplemented in the team by current players in the NHL or those who are still fighting for it, we as a Slovakia can have a chance to be invited to the tournament. At present, the Germans have much better cards in their hands with Switzerland.
