The final at the World Cup in Qatar was Hugo Lloris’ last victory in the Les Bleus shirt. After 145 international matches and 10 years as captain, the French goalkeeper put an end to his international career.
Lloris says this in an interview with the French sports newspaper L’Equipe. “There comes a time when you have to know that you have to pass the baton,” he says. “I’ve always said that the French team belongs to nobody. Behind me there is a team ready to continue.”
At the World Cup in Qatar, Lloris broke the record for appearances for the French national team. By reaching the final again with Les Bleus, he overtook Lilian Thuram (141 appearances) and now finishes with 145 appearances.
He lost his last international match – the World Cup final – on penalties, but Lloris still has a good track record from his 14 years with the national team. He played 4 World Cup finals, 3 European Championship finals and won 2 trophies: the World Cup in 2018 and the Nations League in 2021.
Normally, Mike Maignan now takes his place as number 1 in France. The AC Milan goalkeeper missed the World Cup in Qatar due to an injury.
