San José, Sep 28 (EFE) .- The World Bank will support a Costa Rican program to strengthen the blue economy and improve the conditions of fishermen, aquaculturists and marine resources, an official source reported Tuesday.
The Presidential House explained that the initiative “Sustainable Development of Fisheries and Aquaculture in Costa Rica”, which was recently approved by the Legislative Assembly, is part of a loan with the World Bank.
The objective of the project is to generate an economic boost to the coastal zones, optimize the management of marine resources and modernize the fishing and aquaculture model.
“This project is one more of the actions that demonstrate the Government’s commitment to meet the needs of coastal communities and lead the sustainable management of its marine resources to become a blue leader to carry it out,” said the executive president of the Costa Rican Institute of Fishing and Aquaculture (Incopesca), Daniel Carrasco.
In March 2020, the World Bank approved a loan for 75.1 million dollars to support the sustainable management of the fishing sector in Costa Rica, an initiative that was approved by Congress. The total cost of the program is 82.1 million dollars, the remaining 7 million are a national counterpart from Incopesca.
According to the authorities, this proposal will benefit families that depend mainly on fishing, as well as the shrimp sector, longliners, exporters, commercial tourist fishing, aquaculturists and the final consumer.
The proposal includes the construction of fishing terminals in Puntarenas (central Pacific), in Cuajiniquil, Guanacaste (North Pacific) and in Cieneguita, Limón (Caribbean), as well as the construction of processing plants to add value.
In addition, it will promote existing models such as the Marine Areas for Responsible Fishing, the National Action Plan for Large Pelagic Fishing, the attention of vulnerable groups of fishermen and aquaculturists.
As part of the actions, it will also work with efforts against illegal fishing through the National Coast Guard Service, with more equipment for coastal surveillance in support of national plans for the recovery and protection of marine and coastal resources, and will promote research with specialized personnel and equipment.
