The World Bank grants financing of 60 billion FCFA to Togo for access to water and sanitation in Greater Lomé

The Minister of Economy and Finance, Mr. Sani Yaya, at the head of a delegation took part in Washington DC, in the Spring meetings of the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). On the sidelines of these meetings, Minister Yaya signed with the World Bank a record funding of 100 million dollars, or more than 60 billion CFA francs, as part of the Urban Water Security Project in Togo (TUWS). This aid comes a few weeks after the visit to Togo by the President of the World Bank Group, Mr. David Malpass.

Togo in its vision of strengthening its policy of improving access to water and increasing the quality of sanitation services, has developed a national strategy called ” Urban Water Security Project in Togo (TUWS))”. As part of the implementation of this major project, the government received, last Thursday, a significant envelope from the World Bank. Worth 100 million dollars, or more than 60 billion CFA francs, this financing will make drinking water available to the greatest number of households, as well as improving sanitation services. It was the Minister of Economy and Finance, Mr. Sani Yaya who initialed, on behalf of the government, the agreement with the Director of Operations of the World Bank, Mrs. Coralie Gevers.

According to Minister Yaya, “ this new operation reflects the commitment of the World Bank to help Togo overcome the challenges related to water and sanitation. It will contribute significantly to the achievement of the objectives of the government roadmap which aims for a drinking water supply rate of 80% by 2025 for Lomé, the capital. “. And to add, by strengthening access to drinking water and sanitation, we will contribute to improving the health of populations, reducing the number of water-borne diseases, and creating more favorable conditions for the economic and social development of Togo».

More specifically, the TUWS will make several investments, in partnership with the private sector, to improve the quality and increase access to water and sanitation services in Greater Lomé, by supporting upstream performance operational service providers and water resources management. The project will also improve wastewater management, promote public sanitation and solve the problem of non-revenue water. In addition, there are plans for the rehabilitation of water supply systems, the construction of a faecal sludge treatment plant, technical studies for the longer term increase in large-scale water production capacity and strengthening the distribution network.

The Urban Water Security Project in Togo is part of a larger effort by Togo’s partners to support the implementation of national water access strategies. A round table organized in December 2022 made it possible to collect commitments representing nearly $300 million for the country’s water and sanitation sector, part of which will contribute to the development of water production infrastructure. water in Lome.
