The Deputation of A Coruña and the Xunta de Galicia They sign their commitment to promote the English way through a Working Table that has been constituted this morning. Both administrations have been working separately to improve this route that, from Ferrol or A Coruña, communicates with Santiago and continues to Fisterra on a path that begins and ends in the province itself. The pandemic for now has not facilitated the arrival of pilgrims, only 5,000 so far this year when around this time in 2019 the 100,000 pilgrim was about to arrive.
The objective of this table, with representation also of the regions through which the road passes, social and academic sectors, is to agree on the actions necessary for its care and protection. The Santo Xacobeo double year “is a unique opportunity” for the province, highlighted the vice president of the Xunta, Alfonso Rueda.
For all who visit this route the Provincial Council invests money in the aesthetic and environmental improvement of the surroundings, with agreements with the councils.
“Now it is time to take advantage of it [el camino]”, said Vice President Rueda. Both leaders have highlighted the mutual agreement for and the necessary collaboration between administrations so that the English route represents a catalyst of income for the regions through which it crosses.
On this day, the first proposal, presented by the Confederation of Businessmen of A Coruña (CEC), so that the processing of the file of inclusion of the English Way in the Unesco World Heritage list.
At the event, the provincial president, Valentín González Formoso, remarked that this initiative seeks “the involvement of the entire social, business, commercial and institutional fabric”, in addition to highlighting the importance of these Xacobeo roads for the rural world. “It generates an alternative economy,” he said.
On the other hand, he stressed that the Provincial Council has been promoting “a clear commitment to the Camino” for some time. “With initiatives such as the improvement of the paths and routes of all variants, the offer of better services or the signing of agreements to make investments in the historic centers of the municipalities through which it runs”.
“People are going to look for a series of values that may not have been taken into account before and that is offered by Galicia, the Camino and the province of A Coruña,” said Rueda, who stressed that Galicia is prepared to receive tourists and pilgrims with all the guarantees.
In this context, the Xunta activated this week the coronavirus insurance, free of charge and which allows to cover health expenses in the event of a possible case of Covid-19 infection or due to the prolongation of the stay due to quarantine.
