Pleasanton residents now have a whimsical new spot to sit, read, and dream, thanks to the unveiling of “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz Book Bench” at the Pleasanton Public Library. The artistic bench, created by local artist Kristen Chase, was officially revealed on January 11, 2025, in a ceremony that brought together city officials, the artist, and the generous donors who made the installation possible.
The bench, originally part of Danville’s “Bound for Books” temporary exhibit in 2023, found its permanent home in Pleasanton thanks to the efforts of residents Dorothy and Roland Broderson. The couple purchased the bench in an online auction and donated it to the city, where it now sits proudly in front of the library on Old Bernal Avenue.
“I’m so grateful that the bench has found a home in front of the Pleasanton Library,” Chase told the Pleasanton Weekly. “it’s the perfect place! I hope it’ll bring as much joy to the library patrons as it did to me in its creation.”
The bench is more than just a functional piece of art—it’s a heartfelt tribute to The Wizard of Oz, a story that holds special meaning for Chase. “The Wizard of Oz is my favorite movie, and I have fond memories of my Grandpa reading the book to me as a small child,” she shared. “As an aspiring children’s book illustrator, W.W. Denslow, who did the original illustrations, has been an inspiration. I’ve painted an homage to him on the spine of the book bench…a seahorse, wich was his mark.”
The unveiling event was a party of art, literature, and community. Attendees enjoyed a special storytime session and Oz-themed crafting activities, making it a memorable day for families and book lovers alike.
A Community Effort
The installation of the bench is a testament to the power of community collaboration. Dorothy Broderson, who spearheaded the effort to bring the bench to Pleasanton, expressed her gratitude to everyone involved. “Many thanks to Dorothy Broderson for all her efforts in finding this home and to all the folks in Pleasanton who made this happen,” Chase added.
The bench not only enhances the library’s outdoor space but also serves as a reminder of the enduring magic of storytelling. its vibrant design, inspired by the beloved tale of Dorothy and her journey to Oz, invites passersby to pause, reflect, and perhaps even pick up a book.
