The Women’s Unit of the Ruber International Hospital celebrates its 30th anniversary

MADRID, 19 May. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Women’s Unit of the Ruber International Hospital, promoted by Dr. Juan José Vidal Peláez in 1991, has recently turned 30 years old, during which it has been a pioneer in the use of different diagnostic and surgical procedures in obstetrics and gynecology.

Composed of a multidisciplinary team of 13 gynecologists who are experts in the different subspecialties of gynecology, also made up of midwives, nurses, clinical psychologist, physiotherapists, nutritionist, secretaries and clinical assistants, among others, the Women’s Unit offers personalized and immediate access and access to the best techniques and technologies available.

“My approach has always been aimed at helping women in the different stages of their life, puberty, adolescence, maturity, pregnancies, menopause and old age,” said the director of the Women’s Unit of the Ruber International Hospital, Dr. Vidal.

All this, he adds, “with the highest technology available and the best medical and surgical treatments.” One of the greatest transformations in recent years, he continues, “has been in the treatments of gynecological and breast cancer with minimally invasive surgery, infertility treatments and gynecosesthetics”.

Thus, a “fundamental” milestone, according to the director of the unit, for the diagnosis and treatment of gynecological processes has been radiological and nuclear medicine techniques, “such as 3D and 4D ultrasound, essential in prenatal diagnosis. , the latest generation scanner and magnetic resonance imaging, high-resolution mammograms, the use of PET-CT to detect tumor metastases or the location of sentinel nodes in cases of the breast and the genital tract “, emphasizes the doctor. “To all this must be added the current surgical instruments, which allow laparoscopic surgeries and hysteroscopies to be performed”, adds the doctor.

In addition, the Women’s Unit during these 30 years continues to pay special attention to preventive medicine. “In a specialty like ours, it is essential to act preventively on several fronts. One of them is to give advice to avoid sexually transmitted diseases, mainly human papillomaviruses (HPV), which are responsible for neck cancers. We also advise to avoid the indiscriminate use of hormonal contraceptives, assessing the risks and benefits of such treatments and we carry out an exhaustive control of pregnancies to avoid diseases such as diabetes and hypertension and prevent premature births “, explains Vidal.

In his opinion, progress in recent years in medicine has been continuous, both in diagnostic and therapeutic techniques, “for that reason our objective is to incorporate them as soon as there is scientific evidence of their usefulness”, asserts the director of the Women’s Unit .

Regarding the specialists that make up each area of the unit, the director highlighted the work of doctors Julio Álvarez Bernardi and José Rubio Valtueña, experts in gynecological oncology “capable of treating, in most cases, cancers of the genital tract through minimally invasive surgery such as laparoscopies and hysteroscopies “, indicates Vidal. “Doctor Esther Suárez Agustín deals with the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer,” says the doctor.

Likewise, for the early diagnosis and treatment of the most frequent types of cancer in women, cervical, endometrial and ovarian cancer, “is the person in charge, Dr. Alfonso Duque Frischkorn, to detect sexually transmitted diseases through colposcopies , liquid cytologies and bacteriological smears “.

In addition, Vidal highlights, since its inception, the Women’s Unit has performed assisted reproduction treatments, always using the latest techniques available in this area. Cycles of insemination, ‘in vitro’ fertilization (IVF), IVF with preimplantation genetic diagnosis, egg donation and cryopreservation cycles. According to Vidal, Dr. Elena Meliá Fullana is the Medical Director of Assisted Reproduction of the Women’s Unit and together with Dr. Vega Cabezuelo Sánchez, they are part of the Reproduction Unit of the Ruber International Hospital.

“To treat any possible functional disorder in women, from the first period and control the different changes and problems that occur during menopause, is Dr. María Teresa Martín Pedraza, who is also responsible for gynecosesthetics, an area that is growing every time more demand “, acknowledges the specialist.

“Pregnancy control and preparation for childbirth have always been essential in the daily work of all the doctors in the unit. At the head is Dr. Ángel Lorenzo Álvarez, pioneer in the introduction of the non-invasive prenatal test (TPNI),” he adds the head of the Women’s Unit.

On the other hand, Vidal also highlights the work of the unit’s clinical psychologist, Elena Iracheta. “This great multidisciplinary team is completed by the recently hired gynecologist, specialist in menopause and general gynecological examinations, Dr. Sebastián Sessa and two external gynecologists, Dr. Nuria López and Isabel Rodríguez-Piñeiro. Physiotherapists such as Inmaculada Camisón and Pilar Cortés, specialized in prevention of the alterations of the pelvic floor to avoid urinary incontinence and prolapse of the genital tract, the nutritionist Sara Romero, midwives, nurses and assistants, as well as the public relations of the unit, Fatima Labaig “, concludes Dr. Vidal.
