When the Byzantine emperor Theophilos decided to choose a wife, he approached Kassiani, impressed by her beauty. Wanting to provoke her, however, he said to her, “from a woman, vices arise”, meaning Eve and original sin. Without hesitation, she answered him “it comes from women”.
If the legendary episode happened today, there would be many Sfakianakis who would comment: “With what audacity did he oppose a Kojam emperor? He did well not to marry her.” In this obscurantist perception that sees women as an accessory to men’s companionship or as a plume of steam over their pots are the murders of women, for which Greece has a sad first for the first quarter of 2024. If anything however, the case of the missing Sunday shocked public opinion and became news abroad, this is the feeling of the defenseless citizen. “The patrol car is not a taxi” is the cynical confession that the Mitsotakis government, with blood staining the wall of the police station in Agioi Anargyrou, is in fact losing its last stronghold, the safety of the citizens.
Good news for the media and the way they covered up the crime. It contained all the elements that arouse the sentimentality of the public, but no serious side of the subject. Nowhere was it mentioned how many shelters there are for battered women to prevent harm instead of mourning victims. Nowhere has any statistical research been made public about the age of the perpetrators, which is decreasing, which is extremely worrying. No panel of lawyers debating the necessity of the term femicide. Instead we often hear that it’s a neologism, a silly fad of feminist hysteria.
As an example, we note that the term “féminicide” was used in the French press as early as the late 1820s and subsequently expanded to include lovers, fathers and brothers, promoters, soldiers and rapists. It is also answered in an English study of 1801 and described in detail in an Oxford law dictionary from 1848.
Of course, the ND stubbornly refuses to institutionalize the term for fear of losing its conservative voters who cannot even hear it, because it captures a social and political phenomenon in which they are unconsciously mirrored, ripping off the imprinted idealizations of the patriarchy. Therefore, the tearful posts of the prime minister and Chrysochoidis’ announcements about sanctions are not enough. What to do with the digitization of the state that is crowed about when a police officer is bored searching the database to see the history of murderers?
The personalization, with chilling details of the couple’s life and the staged dramatization of the killer, is also a big mistake. None of them are different from the rest of the fake boys, who, enclosed in the space of self-indulgence and domineering behavior, are “threatened” by a separation and seek only what perversely enriches their ego.
If the female womb carries life, in the patriarchal society, unfortunately, the evangelical saying is still incubating: “Let the woman fear the man”.
