Germany reported that it will stop providing sick pay to those who have not been vaccinated against COVID-19 and who must be quarantined due to the disease.
Previously, Germans could claim reimbursement for lost income if they had to self-quarantine after returning from abroad or come in contact with a positive case.
Health Minister Jens Spahn explained that the measure is a matter of “justice”, arguing that by the time the new rule comes into force, on November 1, everyone who wants to be vaccinated will have had the opportunity to receive it.
Those who choose not to “will have to take responsibility for this, including the financial costs,” he added.
Germany has fully vaccinated 63.4% of its population. The government says it wants to achieve a 75% vaccination rate to prevent a flare-up of cases during the winter months.
