Polish game publisher and developer CD PROJEKT has been hacked, the company reports on Tuesday Twitter. The company has become a victim of so-called ransomware, where files become inaccessible and the hacker demands a ransom to release them.
“Although some devices on our network are encrypted, our backups are intact,” the company writes. “We have already secured our IT infrastructure and have started to recover the data.”
In the hostage letter, the perpetrator provides the full source code of Cyberpunk 2077 and CD PROJECT previous games The Witcher and the related card game GWENT to control.
Internal documents relating to administration, legal affairs, communication about investors and investments and personnel affairs were also allegedly stolen. The letter also states that the hacker has encrypted servers, “but we realize that you can most likely recover them from backups”.
The hacker or hackers threaten to sell or publish the source codes online if they don’t “come to an agreement”. The stolen documents would also be sent to journalists.
CD PROJEKT does not write to respond to the demands or to negotiate with the perpetrator. The company is aware that this could lead to the disclosure of the data, the statement said.
As far as the Polish game publisher is aware, no player data has been stolen. CD PROJEKT has contacted authorities and digital forensic experts.
