There is also not much to be gained for the console market in terms of specs. You already saw that with the previous generation. Not for nothing both came with a refresh, as the PS4 Pro was a bit thin in my eyes.
It’s just unrealistic to expect a $ 500 console to go with hardware that costs double that. There are indeed some tricks with optimization, but you can already see that Sony cannot offer 4K and 60 fps for first party titles from the start. So I expect even less from third parties who simply do not have the means to optimize everything for the PS5 while there is also an Xbox and PC that do not have a special SSD and power management construction.
The problem is not betting on AMD, the problem is that development takes years beforehand and once a choice has to be made. Then it is finished and you have the problem that new products are coming out all the time. You have the same with the PC, but you can make a choice there more easily when you get in and you are not dependent on a third party that does that for you.
A console of 800 euros would postpone that problem for a year at the most and you really lose a very large part of your market. I think they are already sharply priced at 500-600 euros. You must not forget that you have to deposit the 800 euros immediately, and if it breaks after the warranty, it is a lot more expensive per month. You can also easily cancel Netflix that things are going less financially.
The PC simply won. Not like in the PC masterrace meme, but in the hardware market. Consoles are just PCs instead of those custom machines from the past and the desktop is just much more powerful because it has the same parts, but you can also buy newer ones. The times of the console that does what a computer cannot are unfortunately a thing of the past.
